Addressable fire alarm systems consist of a central control panel, with a number of devices such as detectors, sounder, beacons, and manual call points, attached to a loop of cable, that starts at and terminates at the control panel.

Each device attached to the loop has a unique address, which can be programmed onto the device via a hand held programmer or via the central control panel. This address has a description that identifies the type of device and its location, enabling the exact detector that was triggered to be quickly identified via the panel display. This makes addressable fire alarm systems more appropriate for large buildings, such as hotels, care homes, schools and public buildings, and commercial premises that are more complex and spread over a wide area.
